Claude is available from five places - the claude.ai web app, the desktop app, mobile apps, the Chrome extension, and Slack - and the right one changes with the task, not with habit.
This page walks through ten common scenarios and ranks the interfaces for each, so you can stop defaulting to whatever's already open and start picking on purpose.
Scenario: A general question you could ask from anywhere - no files, no webpage, no urgency beyond "answer this now."
| Rank | Choice | Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Best | Web app (claude.ai) | Full feature set, no install, works from any browser you're already in |
| 2nd | Mobile app | Just as fast if you're already on your phone |
| 3rd | Desktop app (Chat mode) | Fine if it's already open, but installing it just for this is overkill |
Wrong choice: Opening the desktop app from scratch for a single quick question when a browser tab is already open. Why best is best: The web app has zero setup cost and the full conversational feature set - there's nothing this task needs that a browser tab doesn't already provide.
Scenario: An article, product page, or long document open in a browser tab, and you want to ask about it without losing your place.
| Rank | Choice | Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Best | Chrome extension | Ask right next to the page, no copying or tab-switching |
| 2nd | Web app (claude.ai) | Works, but requires copying the content over manually |
| 3rd | Mobile app | Only if you're reading on your phone and don't have the extension available |
Wrong choice: Copying a long passage into a fresh claude.ai tab for a question you could have asked in place. Why best is best: The Chrome extension exists specifically to remove that copy-and-switch friction for exactly this situation.
Scenario: A task defined by "go through this folder and do X" - reorganizing files, drafting several related documents, or multi-step work spanning more than one file.
| Rank | Choice | Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Best | Desktop app - Cowork mode | Built specifically for autonomous, multi-step work inside a local folder |
| 2nd | Desktop app - Chat mode | Workable for smaller jobs, but you'll be copying content in and out manually |
| 3rd | Web app (claude.ai) | Same manual copy-paste limitation as desktop Chat mode, without even the local app |
Wrong choice: Trying to do multi-file work by pasting each file into a web app conversation one at a time. Why best is best: Cowork is the only mode built to act across files autonomously, rather than requiring you to manually shuttle content in and out of a conversation.
Scenario: Implementing a feature, fixing a bug, or refactoring part of a codebase.
| Rank | Choice | Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Best | Desktop app - Code mode (Claude Code) | Purpose-built for coding work as a command-line agent |
| 2nd | Desktop app - Cowork mode | General file autonomy, but not tuned for a codebase's conventions and tooling |
| 3rd | Web app (claude.ai) | Fine for discussing code conceptually, not for hands-on implementation |
Wrong choice: Pasting code back and forth in a plain web conversation for anything beyond a quick snippet question. Why best is best: Code mode is specifically built around software development workflows, which neither Cowork nor plain conversation is tuned for.
Scenario: You're out, on the move, and want to check on or continue a conversation.
| Rank | Choice | Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Best | Mobile app | Built for exactly this - quick, on-the-go access with full sync |
| 2nd | Web app on a phone browser | Works, but the dedicated app is smoother |
| 3rd | Wait until you're at a computer | Reasonable if the task genuinely isn't urgent |
Wrong choice: Assuming you have to wait until you're back at a desk for anything beyond an emergency. Why best is best: Mobile syncs with your other devices automatically, so checking in or replying from your phone loses nothing.
Scenario: A Slack thread needs summarizing, or you need a quick draft reply without leaving the channel.
| Rank | Choice | Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Best | Claude in Slack | Native to the thread, no copy-paste into another app |
| 2nd | Web app (claude.ai) | Workable if the task needs something Slack's integration doesn't yet support |
| 3rd | Desktop app | Same limitation as the web app, plus the overhead of switching apps entirely |
Wrong choice: Copying an entire Slack thread into claude.ai for a task Slack's own integration already handles. Why best is best: For its supported actions (thread summaries, reply drafts), Slack's integration is faster precisely because it doesn't require leaving the tool your team is already in.
Scenario: Something with real depth - extended research, a long piece of writing, or a task you'll return to over multiple sessions.
| Rank | Choice | Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Best | Web app (claude.ai) | Full feature set and easy access to your full conversation history |
| 2nd | Desktop app (Chat mode) | Equivalent features, useful if you prefer a dedicated window |
| 3rd | Mobile app | Workable for checking progress, less comfortable for sustained composing |
Wrong choice: Trying to do deep, sustained work through the Chrome extension or Slack, both built for quick, narrow interactions. Why best is best: Longer work benefits from a full screen, easy history access, and no scope limits - exactly what the web and desktop app's Chat mode provide.
Scenario: Evaluating or rolling out Claude across a group, with shared access, admin needs, or collaboration in mind.
| Rank | Choice | Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Best | Team or Enterprise plan, web + desktop as needed | Adds admin and collaboration features on top of the same interfaces |
| 2nd | Claude in Slack, layered on top | Useful complement once the team already lives in Slack |
| 3rd | Individual Free or Pro accounts per person | Works in a pinch, but skips shared admin controls |
Wrong choice: Rolling out individual Free accounts across a team when Team or Enterprise tiers exist specifically for shared/admin needs. Why best is best: The interfaces themselves don't change at the team level - what changes is the admin and collaboration layer that Team and Enterprise plans add on top.
Scenario: A quick, low-stakes question where speed matters more than depth.
| Rank | Choice | Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Best | Any interface, Claude Haiku 4.5 | The fastest model in the lineup, available across surfaces |
| 2nd | Any interface, Claude Sonnet 5 (default) | Still fast, and you may not need to switch models at all |
| 3rd | Claude Opus 4.8 | Overkill for a simple question, though not wrong |
Wrong choice: Reaching for the most capable model by habit when the question doesn't need that depth. Why best is best: Model choice, not interface choice, is what matters here - a faster model gets a simple answer back quicker, on whichever interface you're already using.
Scenario: You want to use Claude but can't install new software on the machine in front of you.
| Rank | Choice | Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Best | Web app (claude.ai) | No install required, full conversational feature set in a browser |
| 2nd | Mobile app on your own phone | A workaround if even browser access is restricted |
| 3rd | Ask IT to install the desktop app | Only worth it if you specifically need Cowork or Code |
Wrong choice: Assuming you can't use Claude at all without admin rights to install software. Why best is best: The web app needs nothing beyond a browser, so it works even in the most locked-down environments.
Stack versions: Written against the Claude model lineup current as of ~June 2026 - Claude Fable 5, Claude Opus 4.8, Claude Sonnet 5 (the default), and Claude Haiku 4.5. Model names, pricing, and product features move quickly - verify current specifics at platform.claude.com/docs before relying on them.
